The expression "lock, stock and barrel" goes way back, and is directly related to the manufacture of guns. To assemble a complete gun you need three parts:
The complete weapon consisted of lock, stock and barrel, so the expression means "everything, the whole thing".

  1. The lock - the firing mechanism (along with the trigger). It's likely the name was given to the mechanism because it looked a bit like the primitive door locks of the period.
  2. The stock - the wooden parts of the gun that give it its shape and make it easy to hold
  3. The barrel - smooth bore or rifled (complete with breech plug)

If you have all three parts, you can assemble a complete gun.
At one time you would order a gun in parts: Stock from a stockmaker custom fit, the right length and type of wood. Barrel for the appropriate caliber and length.Lock was the firing mechanism of early types of firearms, such as the firelock, flintlock, and matchlock you could choose which was right for you usually based on what you could afford

With the onset of the industrial revolution gunsmiths became gun makers and you could go to a single store and order the complete gun at once…..Lock Stock and Barrel.

The first reference in the Oxford English Dictionary is to a letter of Sir Walter Scott's of 1817: "She wants stock, lock, and barrel, to put her into repair". It may in fact have been invented by him.
